Scientists in Management

Facts: Many scientific and technical people have little or no background, experience or education in business management. Good scientists do not necessarily make good managers. When in growth mode, many organisations promote their scientists to managerial roles, but with little accompanying support.

"Management is a curious phenomenon. It is generously paid, enormously influential, and significantly devoid of common sense."
Henry Mintzberg

Objectives:

To create a tailored programme of training and development for new managers coming from scientific and technical echelons. To accelerate the process of their integration into managerial responsibilities and point them to further continuous development.

Activities:

A one-week training programme 'Scientists in Management' addressing a variety of management issues such as organisational, people and performance management, foundations of financial management and/or strategy framework and tools. Versions B and A of the programme refer to their basic or advanced levels of the course.

Outcome:

Awareness and learning of fundamental ideas, tools and methods needed for day-to-day managerial responsibilities, enough to facilitate a speedy uptake into new roles. Basic or Advanced provision of training support.

When?

New managerial responsibilities for people with scientific and technical backgrounds. Any point in the growth curve of the company.

Typical Time Frame:

This is usually a one-week course for each version, Basic and Advanced.
